Why can't Hong Kong use the vote of all people instead of such a mess?
This is actually a great question, and it goes to show that Democracy does not mean elections. Elections are not silver bullets that magically resolve all political conflicts in a peaceful way. Look at Afghanistan: people vote along tribal lines, and the elected officials are the same old tribal chiefs, and women are still treated like they were under the Taliban. (Incidentally, before the Taliban, who were put into power by the US, Afghan women enjoyed considerable freedom and respect.) The current mess in HK is a good example of what happens when an extremist minority does not agree with the election result. The silent majority can hold rallies in support of the authorities: Yet the protesters are still attacking police and beating up innocent bystanders. There is even a video of a group of those animals sexually assaulting a woman in public. In a lawful society, it is up to the police to keep order and stability. As a law-abiding citizen, what can you do when the police fails to do their job? Shit all, unless they decide to take the law into their own hands, and thats the path to social disintegration. Voting does not and will not change any of this. A strongly motivated minority will always override a passive majority regardless of election results. This is why there have been countless coups in third-world democracies. Whats playing out in HK has been played out many times before in Zimbabwe, Thailand, Malia, Haiti, etc.
